BIO 470 - Coastal Marine Habitats

Our world’s coastal marine habitats are becoming increasingly degraded largely as a result of irresponsible human activity and ineffective management. Students will study the structure, function, and dynamics of coastal marine habitats and how humans impact them. Habitats that will be explored include rocky intertidal areas, sandy beaches, tidal and mud flats, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows. Content will focus on the greater ecological importance of each habitat, the causes and effects of habitat degradation, and current management and restoration strategies. Lectures will include exploration and discussion of peer reviewed literature. Labs will focus on analyzing ecological survey data, as well as performing toxicity experiments.

Prerequisites: BIO 200  or BIO 280  or BIO 301  (with Instructor’s permission)
