ENG 261 - African American Literature


This course introduces students to the African American literary tradition, which spans five centuries and all the genres including drama, film, verse, fiction, memoir, music (such as jazz, blues, hip hop) and more. Readings vary by section and may survey the tradition or focus more acutely on topics such as African American Poetry, Black Women Writers, Black American Stage and Screen Artists, and others. 

Prerequisite: a 100-level literature course
1 semester 3 credits.
