BIO 279 - Local Field Ecology Local Field Ecology deals with the study of organisms and their ecological systems in their natural habitat, with special emphasis upon classification, identification, natural history, and ecology of Long Island ecosystems and their components (species, populations, communities). This course is designed to provide valuable field experience in the observation, interpretation, and identification of a wide variety of plant and animal taxa and their associated ecosystems. To facilitate this experience, initial training will be conducted in the classroom followed by extensive time at a wide variety of locations in the field, including: salt marshes, inland wetlands, lakes, streams, estuaries, ocean, and forest systems. Students must register with the same instructor for lecture and laboratory.
Prerequisites: BIO 108 , BIO 118 or BIO 200 . BIO 279 is recommended for biology majors and environmental studies minors. Note: A student may not take BIO 279 and BIO 280 . 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory a week 1 semester 4 credits. Offered when there is sufficient student demand. Lab fee-$60
