BIO 279 - Local Field Ecology Local Field Ecology deals with the study of organisms and their ecological systems in their natural habitat, with special emphasis upon classification, identification, natural history, and ecology of Long Island ecosystems and their components (species, populations, communities). This course is designed to provide valuable field experience in the observation, interpretation, and identification of a wide variety of plant and animal taxa and their associated ecosystems. To facilitate this experience, initial training will be conducted in the classroom followed by extensive time at a wide variety of locations in the field, including: salt marshes, inland wetlands, lakes, streams, estuaries, ocean, and forest systems. Students must register with the same instructor for lecture and laboratory.
Prerequisites: BIO 151 or either BIO 108 , BIO 118 or BIO 145 with instructor’s permission. This course is recommended for biology majors and environmental studies minors. Note: A student may take BIO 279 and BIO 280 ONLY with permission of chairman.
1 semester 4 credits. Offered when there is sufficient student demand. Lab fee-$60
