Required Courses

The following courses are required to complete the major:

• SPC 102 - Introduction to Human Communication 3 credits.
• SPC 115 - Voice and Diction 3 credits.

•  

• SPC 204 - Interpersonal Communication 3 credits.

• OR

• SPC 218 - Normal Language Development 3 credits.

Electives

18 credits selected from the entire range offered and with departmental guidance according to the student’s interests and needs.

Bilingual Option

Students may choose to major in Speech Communication and minor in Spanish in order to develop bilingual skill. Six courses in Spanish will be completed with advisement from the Department of Modern Languages; the emphasis should be on grammar, composition, and conversation.

Speech-Language Pathology

Students who plan to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology should note that the following courses may be required for graduate school admission:

• SPC 212 - Phonetics 3 credits.
• SPC 218 - Normal Language Development 3 credits.
• SPC 220 - Sound and the Auditory Mechanism 3 credits.
• SPC 319 - Speech-Language Pathology I 3 credits.
• SPC 320 - Speech-Language Pathology II 3 credits.
• SPC 340 - Audiology 3 credits.
• SPC 342 - Aural Rehabilitation 3 credits.
• SPC 410 - Anatomy, Physiology, and Neurology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism 3 credits.
• SPC 424 - Clinical Procedure and Practice 3 credits.
