Medical Technology, B.S. (Professional Studies)

The B.S. in Medical Technology prepares students for careers in the health care field as clinical laboratory scientists. The program requires 96 credits toward the St. Joseph’s University curriculum (which can include transfer credit) and one year of specialized didactic and clinical training in an approved hospital program. St. Joseph’s has an agreement with New York- Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science program to provide this final year. The program at the School of Laboratory Science is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Students who complete the program receive a B.S. from St. Joseph’s University and a Certificate from the School of Clinical Laboratory Science. Graduates are eligible for licensure in New York and may sit for the examination administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Students with prior medical training and/or non-traditional educational backgrounds would pursue their primary program in Professional Studies at St. Joseph’s University followed by one year of study at New York - Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program. - www.nypcls.org

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
An applicant wishing to pursue the B.S. in Medical Technology within Professional Studies must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, have post secondary education and training, and have acquired, through experience, the skills and knowledge appropriate to the degree. Having met the general admission requirements, the applicant must be deemed capable of completing the requirements of Professional Studies.

Applicants who are currently enrolled in their junior year of University (3+1):

Applicants must be enrolled in their junior year of University at St. Joseph’s University, on path to receive their bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.

Upon successful completion of their program, applicants in Pathway I will automatically be eligible to sit for the ASCP Examination.

In order to be admitted to the New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program for the final year of the program, students will be required to maintain grades of C or above for the course requirements at St. Joseph’s University, and must have completed the major, liberal arts, and other requirements mandated by St. Joseph’s University and the New York- Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Clinical Laboratory Science Program. 

A NOTE REGARDING NEW YORK STATE LICENSURE:

As of 2013, in order to qualify for licensure to work as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York, applicants must have received a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from a program registered for licensure with the New York State Department of Education Office of the Professions. Additionally, individuals must have completed coursework specifically in Analytical Chemistry or Biochemistry. New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is a NAACLS accredited program but is not a degree-granting institution. Therefore, NYPBMH does not directly qualify to register its program with the NYS Department of Education. However, students in the program are able to meet the necessary requirements through NYPBMH’s relationship with affiliated Universitys, allowing them to complete the necessary coursework towards a certificate/degree at these institutions and to qualify for national certification, as well as New York State licensure.
