The rationale for the Dual Degree and Accelerated BS/MS Program in Computer Science/Criminal Justice to Master of Science in Cyber Security and the Dual Degree and Accelerated BS/MS Program is to address the rise in information security employment growth (about 20% growth according to the Bureau of Labor statistics), a melding of skill sets involving computer science and criminal justice needed for entry level and management positions in cyber security and to better prepare students at the undergraduate level for the skills needed at the graduate level. Cyber security is evolving, particularly in the New York City area as a growing profession in that Burning Glass (an employment search firm business) estimates that cyber security professional employment positions will rise in New York City over 100%. Additionally, traditional crime, and the focus of private security and traditional crime has shifted to information based-crime in that now, nearly 80% of crime suppression and security strategies address conditions related to information, such as identity theft and fraud. Students interested in careers in criminal justice and security need to be prepared with skills related to computer science and computer information technology. Both programs are planned to be completed within 5 years, including all prerequisites.
Effective with the Fall 2024 semester, All Criminal Justice majors are required to complete an 18 credit minor of their choosing. The 18 credit minor replaces the one track that students must currently complete.
