Studio Arts, B.A. (SJNY Long Island)


The B. A. in studio arts is designed to provide students with a well-balanced education in a wide variety of media, and an in-depth study of a chosen area of concentration.  It will also introduce historical and contemporary views of art, as well as theoretical and critical issues.  Studio concentrations are available in the areas of painting, digital design, printmaking, ceramics, and crafts as an art form.  The degree requires 42 credit hours in art courses.  It allows students to combine the study of studio art with broader liberal studies or a second major. 

Additional Info for Transfer Students enrolling as Studio Art Majors, Studio Art Minors, and Child Study Majors with Art Concentrate:

Maximum of  21 transfer credits of art courses accepted

All upper level courses, (including Art 263 Crafts II,  Art 275 Advanced Graphic Design, Art 283 Drawing II, Art 284 Painting II, Art 286 Ceramics II, Art 400 Senior Project, and Art 470 Senior Seminar) must be taken at SJNY and cannot be transferred in.

After completing the required intro-level courses, Studio Art Majors must choose an “area of specialization” in which to concentrate their upper-level courses. Students may choose one of the following designated areas: Painting, Ceramics, Crafts, and Digital Design. Upper-level course selection will be subject to the approval of Art Department faculty.

A B.A. in studio arts opens the door to a vast choice of potential careers and is excellent preparation for the advanced study in many areas.

  • ART 470  A seminar course designed to examine the current art world and possible options for life after graduation and Senior Exhibition.
