This 12 credit certificate is designed to enable Health and Human Services practitioners to apply essential counseling theory and techniques to meet client needs in a variety of institutional settings.

Courses taken for the Certificate in Counseling may be applied toward the B.S. in Community Health and Human Services, Health Administration, or General Studies. Organizational Management students may apply this course work to the non-elective portion of their program.

Required Courses for Certificate: 9 Credits

HS 440 - Principles of Counseling 3 credits.
HS 441 - Counseling Techniques 3 credits.
HS 443 - Mental Health and Crisis Intervention 3 credits.

Elective Courses for Certificate: 3 Credits

Choose one of the following:

HS 230 - Emotional/Behavioral Disturbance in Children and Youth 3 credits.
HS 231 - Child Abuse and Neglect 3 credits.
HS 409 - Psychological Factors in Health and Disease 3 credits.
HS 411 - Alcoholism 3 credits.
HS 412 - Addictions and Dependencies 3 credits.
HS 442 - Family Counseling 3 credits.
PSY 261 - Psychology of Personality 3 credits
PSY 271 - Abnormal Psychology 3 credits

Note(s): (A minimum of 12 credits toward this certificate must be taken at St. Joseph’s College; a cumulative index of 2.0 is required for the certificate.)
