MATHEMATICS MAJOR

(BA or BS degree)

A major in mathematics may earn either the B.A. or the B.S. degree. Candidates for either degree must complete 40 credits of mathematics in which an average grade of C must be attained.

Required Courses: 31 credits

COM 152 - Computer Programming 3 credits
MAT 204 - Analytic Trigonometry and Geometry 3 credits.
MAT 205 - Calculus and Analytic Geometry I 4 credits.
MAT 206 - Calculus and Analytic Geometry II 4 credits.
MAT 207 - Calculus and Analytic Geometry III 4 credits.
MAT 208 - Advanced Calculus 4 credits.
MAT 354 - Modern Algebra 3 credits or MAT 356 - Linear Algebra
MAT 362 - Modern Geometry 3 credits or MAT 364 - Topology
MAT 471 - Seminar 3 credits

Electives: 9 credits

Electives are chosen according to the students’ interests and career plans with the direction of their advisors and must be at the MAT 203 level or higher.

Actuarial Science Strand:

This strand, consisting of two additional mathematics courses and several courses from other departments, has been attached to the Mathematics Major in order to help prepare students for prospective careers in the actuarial field. In addition to the requirements for the major, it is recommended that students preparing for a career in actuarial science take:

MAT 250 - Theory of Interest 3 credits
MAT 346 - Advanced Topics in Probability and Statistics 3 credits
BUS 100 - Process of Management 3 credits.
BUS 219 - Principles of Finance 3 credits.
BUS 315 - Principles of Investments 3 credits.
ACC 200 - Fundamentals of Financial Accounting 3 credits.
ECO 120 - Macroeconomics 3 credits.
ECO 226 - Microeconomics 3 credits

Note(s):

It should be noted that both MAT 250 and MAT 346 count as electives for the mathematics major.
